Phil Jardine and I have our sights set on climbing the Dom (saas-fee/zermatt) in a couple of weeks - has anyone done it in on Skis and offer any advice - for example are the ropes on the steep part above the hut accessible at this time of year?. Any experience/advice would be really helpful. Thanks Ian Wells
Ian - there are several write-ups of previous ski ascents (e.g. Double Anniversary on the Dom, 1967, by Terry Hartley - I can let you have a copy if your library doesn't go back that far , or in Vaucher's "100 Plus Belles Courses des Alpes Valaisannes") but I can't see any very recent write-ups, not even on skirando.ch, which is usually the best place for recent trip records.
Have you tried asking the Hüttenwart your specific question?
Best wishes,
Mike
Thanks Mike - in the end we took local advice which was that it was difficult if the fixed line was under snow and best left to summer - so we went up the allalinhorn and alphubel instead - both 4000+ but much more modest outings. For reference the best info i can find on the web is on the Dom Hutte site http://www.domhuette.ch/touren/dom/index.html.
