Eiger West Flank

Anyone skiied the Eiger West flank? A friend has suggested it for next season so any info would be welcome.

Hi Paul, coincidentally I have been talking to a couple of friends about the same thing, so I'd also be very interested to hear from anyone with experience of doing it, or from you if you're able to find any info outside of this forum.  Cheers, Phil.

Hi Phil,

I've not found a huge amount of info but there's a short article and nice little video here:

Thanks Paul,

Interesting article.  Looking at Fatmap the face doesn't look like sustained 45-55 degrees, but I have no basis to say how accurate Fatmap is.

I found these:

Not incredibly useful but suggest that the climb is straightforward enough, if very exposed.

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Paul, I skied this a few years back (2011).

Quite a few piccies on my blog: http://offpisteskiing.blogspot.com/2011/04/eiger-west-face.html

From memory there was lots of 40+ and steady 45+ in the upper face. The lower face you feel quite exposed to the serac below the col, but that may have backed oof by now - we climbed a short section of ice goulotte on looker's left on the way up to stay out of the firing line. Top turns feel very exposed for 20m or so as you are right on the edge of the NF but its not super-steep there so as long as snow is good then it is fine...

We dossed on the terrace of the station and stashed gear there the next day while we were on the face.

PS ignore th 55 degrees in that Jottnar piece.... you can probably find some if you go looking but the vast majority of the skiing is in the 40s. In good conditions the whole face is skiable from the summit.

Thanks for that Simon, much appreciated.
