Insurance

I'm going to Kazakhstan off piste skiing (snowmile accessed) and ski touring. BMC quoted a silly price. Have AAC membership.

Suggestions welcome, especially if there is not a big older age penalty

Don't know if you have sorted this out, but I thought it worth mentioning that I have just confirmed that I am covered on my insurance for ski touring in Kyrgyzstan. My insurance is through my newly opened Nationwide Flexplus account. I have to pay £13 per month for the account, but it comes with free worldwide insurance (through UK Insurance Ltd) and European breakdown cover (AA). I had to pay a little extra for hazardous sports cover. Cover is worldwide, but excludes countries that the Foreign Office advise against travelling to. At the moment they are offering £200 if you switch your bank account to them (sadly I switched days before this offer was put in place). Seems like a good deal (though, of course, one only knows how good insurance is when one tries to use it).

P.S. I do not work for Nationwide and have no connection to them apart from my account!

Hi Paul

Just make sure your insurance covers you for mountain rescue. Lots of ski touring type trips require enhanced cover as you might be a long way from ski lifts and piste areas. Check with the holiday company as normally you need the expensive insurance.

Good for you though if you've found a bargain!

From memory, there are some requirements for NW cover. I think that it only applies with a guide off piste. I top mine up with Austrian Alpine Club.

I do also belong to the AAC, so hopefully with the combination of the two I will be adequately covered.
