Is mid May too late in the season to ski tour in southern Norway this year?

(Just posted this to the trips section but seems it’s more appropriate here - apologies)

Hi all,

Hoping to get a second opinion / verification.

I live in Tignes and heading to Norway to ski tour for the first two weeks of May.

The guidebook for Norway states that the ski touring season:

- in Sunnmøre runs till June

- in Northern Jotunheimen is best in April and May

- in Voss runs till June.

Does anyone have experience touring these areas in mid May? Trying to work out how much snow we might find.

Any information appreciated - it’s a long drive to potentially not find snow!

Best wishes

James

Ps below is a photo of the areas we are thinking of targeting.

Pps happy to write a trip report to share information, if there is demand.

hi James

I know from friends that in mid April the snow began at 400m altitude in Stranda which is part of Sunnmore area (around Alesund) - this may not be particularly encouraging in terms of your mid-May departure. However, Eagle trips to the far north (south and east of Tromso) in April had good snow and certainly the local folk we spoke to said that the touring season up there continues into June.

Good luck

William
