Winter rooms in the Alps

Who knows some good winter rooms?

My favourite is the Taschachhaus. It has plenty of comfy bunks, a good kitchen / dining room, a good stock of wood for the wood burner and even a supply of wine and beer! There’s also a good selection of day tours available from there so you can comfortably spend 4 or 5 nights there. Wildespitze is reachable with a really cool tour. Last and not least, it as also reachable from the Pitztal lift system so you can load up with real food and coffee etc for the trip.

Does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Love that!

Not so much a winter room as an abandoned shed… but there’s an old shepherds hut just over from the old Col lift above Val Thorens which can launch many Vanoise adventures from the 3 valleys.

Just don’t expect luxury!

That’s great. That would inspire me to go back to that area for a few nights.

What facilities (if any) are there?
Water?
Cooking?
Bedding?

I really like it when I don’t have to carry in a sleeping bag and mat.

I’d just like to put a general warning about winter rooms over weekends (Friday or Saturday night) - they get very full! We have gotten lucky before and had 13 people for 10 beds, but have also passed a hut at 11:00 on Saturday, where 24 people were already planning to sleep in a 10 bed winter room.

It’s a good point. The Swiss huts still need booking even unguardianed. I prefer to go during the week when they are less busy!
